ENSO teleconnections in terms of non-NAO and NAO atmospheric variability

Abstract The validity of the long-held understanding or assumption that El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has a remote influence on North Atlantic (NAO) in January–February–March (JFM) months been questioned recently. We examine this claim further using atmospheric data filtered to separate variability orthogonal and parallel NAO. This decomposition fields is based Principal Component/Empirical Orthogonal Function method whereby leading mode sea-level pressure sector recognised as NAO, while remaining (unrelated) Composite analyses indicate ENSO statistically significant links with both non-NAO NAO at various levels. Additional bootstrap tests carried out quantify uncertainty statistical significance confirm these relationships. Consistent previous studies, we find an teleconnection NAO-related characterised by lower-stratospheric eddy heat flux anomalies (related vertical propagation planetary waves) which appear November–December strengthen through JFM. Under Niño (La Niña), there constructive (destructive) interference anomalous climatological pattern, enhancing (reducing) fluxes over northern Pacific Barents Sea areas. show extreme essentially phenomenon. Some non-linearity teleconnections suggested, including more than La Niña, but degraded due weaker signals smaller sample sizes after partitioning. Our findings have implications for general nature Atlantic, well refining methods characterise evaluate them models.
